Cleaning And Maintenance
How do I clean my wool carpet?

Wool is naturally soil-resistant and easier to clean than synthetic carpet. This is because wool does not accumulate static electricity, which attracts dust. Weekly vacuuming and professional cleaning every 2–3 years will keep your wool carpet fresh and pristine. Wool fiber has a lanolin coating stain-resistant, so if you blot a spill quickly it usually won’t soak into the carpet and stain it. Most spots will come up when blotted with ordinary club soda.

Can I use sealants on wool carpet to prevent dirt building up?

Sealants should not be used on wool fiber because it is naturally resistant to dirt. In fact, chemical cleaners, also known as “topical treatments,” are not recommended. Topical treatments include soil retardants, stain repellents, antistatic treatments and deodorizers. Please be advised that the use of after-market, topical treatments without the express approval of the carpet manufacturer prior to application may void applicable warranties.

Durability
How long can I expect my wool carpet to last?

Wool ages gracefully. Naturally resistant to abrasion and furniture crush, it maintains its color, texture and loft longer than carpets made from synthetic fiber. In fact, wool carpet typically lasts 20–25 years, compared to synthetic’s 7-year average lifespan, making wool a better investment. And with Wool-to-Wool discounts, you can now buy first-quality wool carpets at affordable prices.

Do wool carpets shed at first?

Yes, like all short-staple fibers, wool does shed a little when the carpet is new. The loose fibers created during the weaving process create a little fuzz, which can be vacuumed up. This is typical and does not affect the durability of wool carpet, which has a lifetime three times as long as synthetic carpet.

Do you sell a carpet pad?

We sell a low VOC natural rubber pad made by Leggett & Platt that is especially designed for wool carpets. Using a pad specifically designed for wool carpet will not only provide greater comfort underfoot, but will help prolong the life of the carpet, especially on stairways.

Shipping And Delivery
What are the shipping costs?

In general, shipping cost for carpet is quite reasonable, although the cost does vary depending on the carpet manufacturer, weight of the carpet and geographical location. As an example, a 50-square-yard carpet might cost $50–$100 for delivery to a commercial address. There is an extra charge for residential delivery. Do you have any carpets with jute backing?

Bellbridge Carpets use jute backing on most of their carpets. Unique Carpets also offer many carpets with jute backing.

Vocs, Fireproofing And Mothproofing
What is the difference between first and second-quality carpet?

No. In fact, wool carpet improves air quality and reduces risk of allergy and asthma by absorbing formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides and other household chemicals—and continues to absorb pollutants up to 30 years.

Wool fiber is an eco-friendly choice, in sharp contrast to the petroleum-based materials used in synthetic carpet and area rugs, such as nylon, polyester and olefin. These materials—along with the more than 100 chemicals that are added to the synthetic fiber for stain resistance, wear resistance, fungicides, soil repellants, processing aids and adhesives—emit VOCs such as formaldehyde and may be harmful to health.

Is wool carpet fire-proofed?

Due to its high nitrogen content, wool is naturally fire-retardant. So your wool carpet is never coated in chemicals, yet it complies with fire code. Because wool fiber has a higher ignition temperature, a low flame spread, and is self-extinguishing, wool carpet a good choice near fireplaces. It does not melt, drip or emit toxic fumes when ignited, making wool carpet the specified requirement on installations with the most stringent flammability regulations, such as passenger aircraft and ships, casinos and hotels.

Is your wool carpet moth-proofed or do I need to do that myself?

During manufacture, wool-pile yarns are routinely given a durable insect-resistant treatment to prevent infestation from insects of all kinds, including moths. The secret is in the process, which uses only a small amount of agent and penetrates deep into the wool fiber. Thus the agent does not come in contact with humans or pets who walk on the carpet, and it also does not wash out when the carpet is cleaned. Even insects are not harmed by touching the carpet—they must eat the fiber and digest it before the agent takes effect.

Why do you recommend moth-proofed carpet?

We recommend moth-proofed carpet because from our experience, carpets without moth-proofing are highly susceptible to infestation. Once moths lay eggs in your carpet, you then must replace it or else spray it with moth-resistant chemicals. The use of chemicals at this stage is far more toxic than the smaller amounts used in the normal moth-proofing process. However, if a customer does not want moth-proofing, we can provide choices with two companies that carry untreated wool carpet, Hibernia Woolen Mills and Unique Carpets.
